Upgrade to Win 2003 32 gig Memory

  •  We are upgrading to Win 2003 Advanced server SQL Server 2k with 32 gig memory.  Native memory 4GB -- 2Gig for OS 2Gig for Applications. Does anyone know if Procedure Cache is still limited to the 2Gig of the Application or can it go beyond 2 gig bytes.  Any articles regarding this will be apprecited. Thanks

  • nice box setup . . . extended memory is for the buffer cache only.  so, working within the normal 4gb virtual address space, there are two options only one of which is viable.  the unacceptable one would be to take 1gb from upper memory using the /3gb switch in the boot.ini file.  however, win 2k and 2k03 have a /3gb switch limitation whereby no more than 16gb of physical memory is recognized.  the other option is to use multiple named instances if practacable.  each instance has its own virtual address space with 2gb in the lower region for the sql memory pool, i.e. procedure cache, data cache, connections, data structures, etc.
