Unable to add data disk in Azure SQL Virtual Machine

  • Trying to extend my data disk to get some free space in the drive. But I couldn't able to resize the data disk in my SQL Virtual Machine in Azure as the resize option greyed out. And the disk is managed disks only.

    Please some one can suggest me on this...., it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

  • Disk maintenance has to be done on a machine which is powered down, you cannot add/delete/modify disks on a running VM.

    Can you power down the machine and try again?

  • You need to manage the Disk from Azure Portal.

    To modify the storage settings, select Configure under Settings. You can modify the disk settings for the drives that were configured during the SQL Server VM creation process. Selecting Extend drive opens the drive modification page, allowing you to change the disk type, as well as add additional disks.
