    Why not start by checking if SQL thinks you could use an index on the table.

    Just note that while this will show missing index suggestions, it doesn't in any way correlate to the queries that generated those suggestions. That query could have been called a single time and will never be called again or it could be called hundreds of times a minute. Using this method shows that there are missing index suggestions, but it's grossly inadequate information to make decisions about those suggestions.

    Instead, if you're going to use this approach, I'd suggest you search up queries that use the information from the DMVs to query the execution plans for missing index suggestions. That allows you to correlate to number of times called, resources used, etc.

    Yes, definitely look at exec plan stats as well.  Also, the missing index views do give you some usage numbers on the missing indexes (missing_index_group_stats.user_seeks and .user_scans), and you should definitely list those as well.  Even the index_operational_stats can be useful at times.

    But, again, most critical is to first determine the best clustered index, since you want to cluster the table anyway.  After that, you can worry about possible non-clustered index(es).  If lookups to the table are consistent, a clustered index is often enough, and you don't have the extra overhead of additional index(es).

  • Full DDL for the table would really help.  But for now, try these indexes and then re-examine the stats in a week or two.  Index tuning is definitely an iterative process, particularly the first tuning for any given table.

    If MRN is unique in this table, then specify that in the index AND add it as a key to the end of the nonclus index to make that index unique as well.


    CREATE /*UNIQUE*/ CLUSTERED INDEX Full_Roster_New__CL ON dbo.Full_Roster_New ( MRN ) WITH ( FILLFACTOR = 99, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = ON ) ON [PRIMARY];

  • My answer was a bit flippant, but the point is there's no minimum row count to have before creating an index. What the index is created on (and, even if one is needed at all) is a larger and more complex discussion, but it's a discussion that doesn't start with 'are there enough rows in the table'

  • Every table should have a primary key from the start; that's a given. Beyond that, I add indexes only when unit testing, QA, or post-deployment reveals the need for performance improvement. What you don't want to do is add too many indexes upfront which won't be used.

    For most tables, 3 or 4 is too many.
