SSRS 2000 and 2008

  • We current have SSRS on a SQL 2000 server which I create and deploy reports for using Visual Studio 2003. I'm fairly comfortable using this and the relevant SQL 2000 management tool.

We will shortly be installing a SQL 2008 server for a new application. I don't know much about what is different. I have a few questions:

    - Does this mean I need a newer version of Visual Studio?

    - If so, can VS 2003 and VS 2008 work happily on this same PC?

    - Or could VS 2008 do everything for the existing SSRS 2000 and the new SSRS 2008?

    - I know the management studio application is different for SQL 2008: will I be able to work with the existing SQL 2000 server using this?

    - What is my best way of working in this scenario?

    Sorry for the beginner-type questions!

The two are very different SSRS 2008 is not IIS dependent that is you can run it in file system and since 2005 SQL Server installs a BI development version of Visual Studio so you don't have to buy VS2008 if you are only developing Reports, SSIS packages and SSAS cubes.

  • There are a number of syntax differences between the RDL of SQL 2008 RS and previous versions. Many reports work OK, but some will need upgrading.
