We current have SSRS on a SQL 2000 server which I create and deploy reports for using Visual Studio 2003. I'm fairly comfortable using this and the relevant SQL 2000 management tool.
We will shortly be installing a SQL 2008 server for a new application. I don't know much about what is different. I have a few questions:
- Does this mean I need a newer version of Visual Studio?
- If so, can VS 2003 and VS 2008 work happily on this same PC?
- Or could VS 2008 do everything for the existing SSRS 2000 and the new SSRS 2008?
- I know the management studio application is different for SQL 2008: will I be able to work with the existing SQL 2000 server using this?
- What is my best way of working in this scenario?

The two are very different SSRS 2008 is not IIS dependent that is you can run it in file system and since 2005 SQL Server installs a BI development version of Visual Studio so you don't have to buy VS2008 if you are only developing Reports, SSIS packages and SSAS cubes.

There are a number of syntax differences between the RDL of SQL 2008 RS and previous versions. Many reports work OK, but some will need upgrading.
