What doe you mean by "hidden servers on SP3"? Do you mean SQL Servers that are updated to SP3? An what makes it "hidden"? Is this because they are not broadcasting that there is a SQL service available?

In the Server Network Utility, you have the option, when viewing TCP/IP properties, to click a checkbox to hide the server. What this means is that the server isn't supposed to be populated in any drop down list when you have the option of selecting a SQL Server. For instance, the drop down list of Service Control Manager.

That was exactly the problem. A default instance of developer SQL server on one machine got set to Port 2433 (the hidden server port). This not only caused a problem in SQL Manager on the offending machine, but also on all other SQL Managers on the network. Also, EM did not work on any machine but the offending machine. By changing the port back to 1433, all problems were solved.

tcuscino your a genius! That was it, I was starting to have some goofy problems all around and unhiding the servers (back to 1433) took care the sqlmgr error as well I was unable to register servers on clients machines. My apologies to Mcafee for suspecting them

I'm also having this problem, I also do not see any servers on this machine if I do OSQL /L
There are no virus scaners running on the machine and there are no hidden servers.
Any advice?

Ok, I am having same/similar problem.
I have about 70 Database server all running Win2k and SQL2000 SP3.
Now this is where it gets weird, as Some of the machine are affected and other are not. I would have to say about 20% are having this issue.
All the machine were working properly w/ Sp3 and her are no machines within the network that I am aware of that use th hidden option (since I set most of them up and was not aware of that option, it was never set).
The issue seems to have arisen some time after daylight savings time. I did run a script (perl) that connected to each machine and forced to run a command prompt to :
regedit /s \\masterserver\e\tzupdate.reg
cscript \\masterserver\e\tzupdate.vbs
net time \\masterserver /set /y
The regfile and the .vbs were straight out of M$ and were tested before deployment. So I do nto believe this to be an issue, but you never know so it is mentioned here.
