SQL server Service pack installation

  • It would be great if someone can me help me understand exactly why is it recommended to stop SQL Server serivces before installing a service pack.

    Thanks much

  • If a file that is being updated by the service pack is in use, a restart will be required. Hence, stop the service and it is unlikely that files affected by the service pack will be in use

  • I have applied service pack to many SQL servers without stopping SQL services , all are successful, just FYI

Service pack installer stops the SQL Server (and other affected) services, if they are running. But server reboot is required after completing setup.

If you stop the services before installing a service pack, server reboot is not required.

  • Thanks all for helping understand.... Have a good day
