It's just like buying any other piece of hardware, the more money you spend, the better off you are. My current laptop is a MacBook Pro with 16gb of memory. I run VMWare virtuals on it for SQL Server. My preceding laptop was a Lenovo W510 with 16gb of Memory. Both have multiple SSD drives for storage (the Mac has an external one). In general, you need to get as much memory as possible, fast processors, and storage adequate to your needs. That's it.
Going with a Mac is a big leap. I strongly recommend the Lenovo Thinkpad.

In general, working from home means connecting to the servers from home - if this is the case you only need the client and you should not be concerned about the database having a "lot of data".
If, as suggested, the plan is to have a copy of the database in your laptop that usually is a very bad idea.
Answering your question, most WinTel based laptops come today with four cores and four gigs of memory - more than enough for a client, more than enough to house a small development database if that was the case.

I'll stay with Paul stating that any new laptop can support the client.
However, you might need to consider your connection speed. That can cause troubles as well.

If you don't buy one with a backlit keyboard, you will learn to hate yourself. 😉
