SQL server License

  • Hi,

    I have one silly question.

If I install SQL server in one server and due to some reason I stop the SQL server services i.e. I dont use it anymore, do we need to pay for the license without uninstalling it?

  • Not sure I understand your question. Sounds like you purchased a license for SQL Server, and now want to turn that server off and bring up a new one, and want to know if you need to purchase another license? If that's the question, then the answer is no. You are licensed for active SQL Servers. Now, this also depends on the license you purchased. If you purchased a per-processor license, then legally speaking, you can only license those processors that you have purchased. So, if you're running SQL Server on an 8 processor box and only purchased a license for 4 processors, then you really can only enable 4 processors.

If you turn off a box, you can re-use that license. During server migrations, you don't have to go and purchase all new licenses. That would just be crazy.
