  We want to have 'test,' 'staging,' and 'production' SQL Server Environments. Our production server is SQL Server 2008 R2.

  We are looking at SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition. How closely does that match up to SQL Server 2008 R2?

  Can the databases be migrated between versions?

  The developer edition is identical to Enterprise edition but with different licensing requirements and costs.

  You can migrate a database from 2008 to 2008 r2, but not the other way around.
