SQL Server 2005 SP3

  • Thanks, I am on CU#9

I am curious to see how long it take to run the SP3 upgrade process (on average to see the expecting downtime)?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

We have SQL Server 2005 EE x64 with SP2. So far we did not applied any cumulative updates.

In this case can we directly apply SP3 over SP2?

and why we do not have an option to uninstall SP2 or SP3 in case if its fails to install?

if it fails, do we need uninstall sql server and install it back? or any other options available?

    thanks

  • we put it in QA on a server with SP2 and no CU's. In a week or so we are putting it on a QA server with SP2 and CU10. for production i'm holding out hope MS is going to release it with the latest build already integrated. SP3a or something like that.

Oh there will not be a SP3a.

    There is already a CU1 for SP3 ! (= sp2+cu11)

  • I have a SQL 2005 with service pack 1 instance.

    1) Can I upgrade directly from sp1 to sp3?

    2) Should I apply any other PATCHES/CU etc., after I upgrade to sp3?

    3) Do I need to upgrade or do anything else to my Databases?

    ...thanks, russ

  • you should be able to update directly to SP3.

There is a CU1 for sp3, but you'll have to check it the items fixed would match your usage environment.

  • Thanks ALZDBA !

What about my existing databases. Do I perform some kind of upgrade on them?

  • As always, play it safe and start with a full backup scenario of ALL your databases (including systems databases !)

If all backups completed successfully, only then start the sp3 exe.

Read the sp3 readme to prepare your actions !

Copy your pre-sp3 fullbackup files to a safe location (just in case)

(Be sure they will not get overwritten by the next backup(s) your scheduled jobs make !!! )

Take new full backups of all db after the upgrade and copy that to another safe location.

If you can, start with a test enviroment so you know what to expect during installation !

Work out you scenario and mark all steps you perform !!

  • I didn't encounter any issues applying SP3. (x86 / x64)

The 5 servers were we were on SP2 CU10 I have also upgraded to SP3 + CU1 without an issue.

  • Did you upgrade any clusters?

  • anybody applied SP3 in cluster environment. If you did, did you get any issues?

Can we make a system restore point and apply SP3, and if any thing goes wrong can we go to that restorepoint back? is this works for sql server?

  • It was a x64 cluster (2 nodes / 5 instances) all updated in a single run (because of the approved downtime). The actual upgrade took about a bit less than an hour.

How did you prepare the installation? Have you any advice on how to instal SP3?
