You can change the default file locations when installing SQL Server. You can also move the system databases later if you want to.
SQL DBA,SQL Server MVP(07, 08, 09) "Money can't buy you happiness." Maybe so, but it can make your unhappiness a LOT more comfortable!

You can change the default file locations when installing SQL Server. You can also move the system databases later if you want to.
I have always found this to be a pain - there are more than just database files that should be moved and to get them moved after installation can be quite an effort.

To clarify, I'm talking just about the system dbs. Model and msdb are easy; master is a bit of a pain but it's still doable.

Yes - I know...but then you also have the security certificates, full text catalogs, error logs, default trace, agent logs, dump files and system health trace files. Moving these files requires additional changes and if those changes are not made correctly can cause SQL Server to not start.
