question about upgrading sql2008 r2 standard

  • it appears that it is now possible to upgrade from 2005 enterprise or 2008 enterprise or developer to 2008 r2 standard.

In the past i thought it complained about this requiring enterprise on the upgraded server.

I dont need enterprise abilities anymore so i thought i would have to build a new server it doesnt appear so

the microsoft website doesnt agree with this

  • I don't know about the install part of it. But if you ARE using enterprise features and try to do the restores to standard. The restore will run to completion and then fail when trying to bring the db online (yes the "bug" has been reported to MS).

  • actually most of my databases are still in sql2000 mode

still i thouhgt in the past it flat wouldnt let you change from enterprise to standard without a rebuild

Even if the db is in compat 80, you can still use row_number and stuff like that.

Frankly the only real way to test is to try it out.

As I said earlier, I've never tried or studied that upgrade path so I'll leave that one to someone else.
