I have a server that has a Pair of drives in Raid 1 for the system drive and 6 drives in raid 10 for the data. I notice that the backup files are all placed on the data drive and I am just wondering what the best possible placement of all the database file stores is for maximum performance?

A separate array helps, but only during backups. You don't have heads moving for two separate processes. Not sure how noticeable it would be.
However it's a bad idea. If the array dies, how do you recover? Don't put your backups with your data. fundamentally not a smart thing.

More important than the backups, it sounds like you have the log files on the same array as the data files. Is that correct? If so, you'll want to split that up and separate them.
Edit: Clarification: More important for performance, not necessarily for data loss prevention. Important for that, too.
