Performance Tuning Stored Procedures

  • I believe it's because some of the system owned spids are doing work in the background.  On a dead quiet system, SQL Server has a "heartbeat" that occurs about once every 5 or 6 seconds that can be seen in the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager (at least in XP).

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.
"Change is inevitable... change for the better is not".

  • @steve-2: Thank you for sharing this knowledge and instigating a great dialogue. I have dived into perf tuning and trying to swim much deeper than I've been given the opportunity to in the past, so this has been a valuable find for me. @jeff Moden: This CPU time with the process id code, way cool, thank you so much for that and for the heads up on SysProcesses.

  • Obviously a very stimulating article, Steve - kudos. 🙂

I too used it as a starting point for how to track the total time that a proc was taking to run, and discovered valuable input from others who posted in this thread on the different metrics available.
