Performance Analysis Tools

  • Hey all

Does anyone know of any decent Performance Profile analysis tools that are out there??

I'm setting up a Database review process where i work, part of which is going to be some arbitrary performance testing ie. Populate every table with 10000 rows, run every sp 100 times, then emulate 300 ppl running the top 20 operations at the same time ... and then figure out which ones will cause problems!

Basically, i want to highlight any potential problem areas before a DB is allowed to get to production and i have justification to tell the developer responsible that it isn't going anywhere near my server!?

i'm fine with setting up the trace (so for ur own sake, dont mention the SQL Profiler!!) and writing something to emulate the workload ... but what i'm after is a nice whizzy tool that'll draw the graphs and nicely order (and calcualte for me!) all the facts and figures from the trace, rather than me spending hours doing it manually!!

    Is there anything out there??

    Cheers

    Vinny

  • You can use spotlight from Quest.  It is a very good tool..the URL is given below:

    http://www.quest.com/sql_server/

  • Why not checkout http://www.redgate.com.  I would not look at Quest because they are an Oracle shop trying to get into MS SQL.  They are still primarily Oracle (TOAD is their's)...

  • Spotlight works out pretty well actually - it's true that Quest has other tools for Oracle and DB2 which are very popular but Spotlight has been around for a very long time now and really works very well.
