OLAP Data Dicitonary

  • We are beginning a DW project and will design a data dictionary. What elements are included in your OLAP data dictionary?  (We have fields like source and target systems, source table names, source fields names, source field definitions, same info for target tables, transformations from source to target field, formats of both source and target fields.. and on it goes.)

  • It sounds like you have a good start on documenting the ETL portion of your DW.

One of the interesting parts is clear definitions of measures derived in your warehouse.  You would be surprised how many different definitions of "net sales" can be running around your company.  You may want something to track the business unit(s) or application(s) for which the measure is valid/defined.

Other information to document can be frequency of update in the source, frequency of update in DW, and reasons for known differences.  Examples for the last one can include timing issues, source data updates, etc.

    Food for thought,
