Hello,
I'm tring to test the upgrade process to migrate from SQL server 2005 SP3 to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 before I have to do it for real.
I've built myself a test virtual server using VirtualBox (other virtulisation products are available) running Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Standard SP1 (64 bit). On to this i've installed SQL Server 2005 SP3 Standard edition (32 bit). All software is run under the MSDN license agreement as it's being built and dropped on an almost hourly basis as part of my tests. The OS is currently warning me that it's not genuine.
With all this in mind I'm trying to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I get the following series of screens presented to me:

I was expecting a screen to ask which instance I wished to upgrade, but I only have the default instance installed.
The result of the upgrade process is that I dont have the SQL Server 2008 engine installed and I don't have the tools e.g. SSMS installed.
When I look at the installed programs it shows me that I have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (various) and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup (English) but nothing else 2008 related.
I guess I've done something wrong, but I don't know what.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi Mike, first of all I have never been a fan of the upgrade, always selected a side-by-side, I find it causes less hassle, having said that this is what you have to do so I won't try to change your mind.
Firstly I would upgrade to SP4 of 2005 and give that a go, let me see how that works out for you.
One other thing I have had a few issues with virtual box in the past so it may be that the virtualisation technology may be a factor.

You would need to check setup log files located at %SQL Server folder%\setupbootstrap\log folder
