migration or Upgradation from sql 2000 to sql 2005

  • Hi Experts,

Currently we have a Sql server 2000 production Box Running Under

8.00.194RTMPersonal Edition on( window 2003 server o/s)with 15 Databases & Running 25 Scheduled backups Daily FULL, Transactional backups etc...

Now we r planning to go for Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition with Win server 2003 enterprise edition.

1)What r the best considerations to be taken before up gradation or migration

2)Please clarify diff Between up gradation & Migration

    3) To move all the databases from sql 2000 to 2005?

    4) Is it required to move System databases?

    5) To move all the scheduled jobs .?

    6) To move logins,users?

    7) To move Linked servers etc...?

Finally i need to implement same old setup to new sql server 2005 Box

    Please reply

    Thanks in advance

there is no such term as upgradation, you mean upgrade.

It may be a good idea to install the sql2005 upgrade advisor and see what that produces.

2)Please clarify diff Between up gradation & Migration

upgrade is exactly what it says, you are installing over the top of an existing system. You will not be able to do this as there is no upgrade path from sql2000 pe to sql2005 Ent Edition. Install a clean system and migrate your user databases across with any logins, etc required

    4) Is it required to move System databases?

    you cant move them

    6) To move logins,users?

    7) To move Linked servers etc...?

    Any further valuable suggestions please.

    Thanks in advance

  • I quite like the term 'upgradation'... we all knew what the original op was trying to say!

A quick search within SSC will produce numerous topics on the subject of upgrading SQL 2000 to 2005 & 2008.

    Don't forget Google's your friend!

    Cheers,

  • thank you Mark 🙂

    You're very welcome Pezza!

  • Consideration: You might want to consider to have the new server with Win 2008 R2 and SQL 2008. Since you have a new hardware, you have a back out plan already. You can test out all the upgrade and migration ahead of time.
