Litespeed for backups

    Hi,

    We are using lite speed for sql server backups.

    If we use lite speed for backups, then do we MUST need to use lite speed for Log shipping too?

    Or can we use native log shipping along with litespeed backups?

    Depends. Is litespeed only being used for full backups or is it being used for the t-log backups as well?

    LiteSpeed includes built-in support for Log Shipping. So, if you'd like to use LiteSpeed, you absolutely can. If you'd prefer to use native, then you would have to make sure you only did Copy Only full backups with LiteSpeed to avoid affecting the log chain.

    If you're using Litespeed for your backups currently then it makes sense to use Litespeed log shipping plans

    Full backups won't affect the log chain unless litespeed does something different that a native full backup.

    You're absolutely correct. My bad. You could do full backups and not have any worry. As the other posters have stated, the OP might as well stay with LiteSpeed for log shipping if they own it. It's integrated, wizard-driven, easy to dynamically add and remove subscribers, and you can resync or reinit the plans easily from the UI, all while taking advantage of LiteSpeed's advanced compression and logging.

    You can script it to and in fact if your log shipping plan involves NATted endpoints through a firewall you have to script it rather than use the wizard.

    Native LS is also wizard driven or script able.

    Assuming you fulfill licence requirements for source and destination, you can use litespeed for logshipping.

    If you dont you can still logship but you will need to either perform a full native backup to get you started or extract a litespeed full using the extractor.exe tool.

    You can the proceed to use native backups for the Tlogs and apply them on the destination. You wont be able to mix up the litespeed and native tlog backups as you will break the LSN chain.

    You could in theory combine the extractor tool into the logshipping process to continue compressing the Tlogs but it would have to be a customer logship designed and implemented by yourself.

    I recall seeing that but couldnt remember the licence agreement which is why I covered all bases by saying this.

    Totally agree with that, but in a native log shipping setup you could use restore only mode as an initalisation of the secondary database.
