DoubleTake

  • Can anyone voice experience with NSI Software's DoubleTake product? I have a problem with some of my operational systems (the ones without primary keys in some tables) I cant use native sql server replication because schema changes are not supported by the vendors. I've recently heard DoubleTake might be a solution. Any comments?

  • DoubleTake replicates to defined target SQL Server host(s) however the SQL services on these hosts do not run until initiated as part of the failover process ie. both the source and target SQL services cannot be run concurrently

  • There are some other issues with DoubleTake:

It doesn't replicate the database in real-time.

It can only replicate what is written to disk. Since the cache only gets written to disk every two minutes or so, then the DoubleTake "target" database is always about two minutes behind.

So if you have to switch to the backup, you will lose all of the previous two minutes of database activity. Of course, if your data is static then that may not be an issue.
