It is a known issue that after applying SP4 for SQL 2000 that the DBCC INDEXDEFRAG operation no longer functions as an online operation and there is a hotfix out there designed to fix this issue. I am wondering - does anyone know if the DBCC INDEXDEFRAG is again considered an online operation in SQL 2005? I understand that this may be going away in future versions of SQL, but would like to continue using it while it is still around. Any relevant information anyone can provide would be appreciated!

If you use DBCC INDEXDEFRAG in SQL Server 2005 it is an online operation but you should use ALTER INDEX REORGANIZE instead in 2005 and this also an online operation.
If you use the enterprise edition of 2005 you can also choose to rebuild your indexes online as well
