Database full backup size smaller than before

  • I did a full back up of my database at 3:00 AM today and the size was 8.05GB now I did a full back up again after nine hours and the size has gone down to 7.49GB . No any data has been deleted from the database, more records have been added. How is this possible? Is something wrong?

    Thanks

  • First question, what other database activities were accomplished (manual, scheduled, or automatic) between backups?

  • Manual data entry as well as automated data updates.

  • Let me clarify, what database maintenance tasks may have be done between backups?

  • No, I don't have any database tasks scheduled betwen these two times.

No, I don't have any database tasks scheduled betwen these two times.

The size of a full backup should be about the size of all pages within allocated extents plus the portion of the t-log created during the execution of the backup plus a little overhead.

If nothing reduced the number of allocated extents then your primary suspect is the portion of the t-log that got backup.
