Binary Installation

  • Has anyone ever heard of a sql server binary installation? If so can you explain? It's in a job description and I'm curious. Thanks for any help.

    :cool:Thanks

  • Could it mean installation of the SQL binaries - ie: the installation of SQL Server application/services

  • I suspect you mean binary collation which is full blown case sensitive. It's claimed using binary collation is much faster but in reality only certain types of searches are faster and the issues with management and coding of a fully case sensitive database usually outweigh any performance gains, if it's not a user database or all your developers/admins/users are used to fully case sensitive applications then you can disregard this of course.

  • I don't believe they are talking about binary collation. I know that mysql and oracle both have what they call binary installations. Since they stated mssql binary installation I was trying to find out what exactly they meant. I appreciate your reply. Thanks.

  • ah - job descriptions don't you just love them. Why not just say install sql server.
