    It depends.

Is this for use in production or development?

What features do you need and what features could you do without?

    How about the business requirements?

What kind of operation are going to be supported?

    - Is it OLTP? how many users? how many concurrent connections?

    - Is it DSS? how may and how big would your datamarts be?

How about business continuity? what are the requirements?

How about development structure? is it going to be a three tier architecture or are you planning to rely on third party vendors?

  • I have to agree with Jason entirely, and I'm not sure you even have an understanding of what SQL is and how it's used. I say that because you ask about the platform and are questioning to go with desktop PC or IA. There could be nothing farther from each other in the wintel world. I would strongly suggest you do some homework on platforms.

As for SQL, what are you planning on using it for? Developer edition is fine for a developer, enterprise is fine for an enterprise utilising the advanced feature.

I'm afreaid, given your verbage, no one will be able to give you a decent answer.
