Thanks for all you help.
I checked the Log while the maintence plan was running. and saw that the % used rose quite a bit due to the index rebuilt etc, although not to the full size but the log is on auto grow so i expect it grew at some stage due to the nightly running.
I knew not to Shrink the files as have read a lot about this subject and knew that the back up process should handle this.
