Can you recommend any alternatives to SSMS?
I think SSMS is a good tool and SSMS Express is also available for free.
However, are there any other good competitors?
I know TOAD was a free tool that was popular several years ago but I think they started charging for it.....

Check out DB Visualizer (http://www.dbvis.com/).
It's especially usefull when you need to manage different database systems other than SQL Server.
They have a (limited) free version if you want to try.
Other than that I must say I'm reasonably happy with SSMS and even though there are some other replacements available with nice features, I mostly think that the extra features are just not enough to justify the extra dollars spend.

I know the only one alternative to ssms - dbforge studio for sql server. It also has free express edition. Code completion and source control are perfect. Take a look https://www.devart.com/dbforge/sql/studio/alternative-to-ssms.html

If you have the money there is Toad for SQL Server. Been years since I last tried it and at that time it wasn't all that stable. I did use Toad with Oracle and it was significantly better than the SQL Server version. Never had an issue with it randomly crashing. Hopefully it has improved since I last used it.
