Ad-hoc query tools

Does anyone know of suitable ad-hoc query builders similar to the one in Access that is compatable with SQL Server?
I've tried linking Access through ODBC but it provides poor perfromance and often crashes when a Left join is used. An ideal tool would provide support for views, sub queries and functions (both user and in-built ones). Most of the tools I have looked at so far lack one if not all of this functionality.

I have not seen any other tool as you need. The biggest problem with tools like Access and the reason they perform so badly is the way they read the data and all views and functions designed on the local copy execute within that environment not pushed out to run against SQL so the data comes down to them locally.

DTS - Execute SQL Task option - Using Query builder.
Probably don't want to give that out though.

Just a thought but have you tried an access project rather than an .mdb?
Smaller footprint and quicker than a straight database.

I've played a little with this http://www.epsilon-logic.net/OfficeQB.asp they had a standard version freebie a while ago now its $49 for the pro. Has a little learning curve, but once you get it, its pretty simple. Here is where I received, I don't see the link working anymore. MS Excel has a set of get external data screens. So does Visual Studio.NET. What 3rd part tools have you looked at so we don't suggest one you've rejected?
