Key Takeaways

  • Great for tracking object movement.
  • Has the ability to show directional trends.

This Flow Map displays the migration movement from one county to another in the state of Florida.

Under the Format paintbrush you will find there are several customizations that you can enable.

  • In the Visual style section you can modify the type of map that is being used and when you select Flow you can group lines together to make the data easier to view.

  • Under the Legend section you can modify how and where the legend appears.

  • Using the Color section you can change the color of the lines. In this scenario I used the Autofill option to prepopulate the colors for me.

  • The Width property can be used to adjust the width of the lines between each point.

  • Modifying the Bubble section will change how the bubbles appear above each point. You can even add a label to the bubbles here.

  • The Detail format section will allow you to modify how the bubble labels will appear.

  • Modifying the Map control will allow you to change the type of map that is shown as well as adjusting the pan, zoom and auto fit interaction.

  • With the Map element feature you can turn on or off several map elements that may be useful to your solution.

  • Under the Advanced section you can turn on/off the visual caching. This is helpful to keep on so the report doesn’t have to re-render all the data points every time the report is opened. The Relocate features allows you to move a geocoded spot to another location.

You can also adjust the background color, add a border around the visual and lock the aspect ratio under the Format section.
