replication wizard doesn't like "shortcut name (local)"

  • The replication wizard stops and says it can't use shortcut names like a dot or like (local). Indeed, the SQL 2000 server manager seems to indicate the database is named "(local)" rather than the name of the server like our Publisher server.

How can this be changed so the replication wizard will work?

  • Explicitly use the actual name of your server.

  • This issue arises because you have an instance of SQL and, by default, when you log onto that server and run Enterprise Manager it uses "local". The replication wizards used by Enterprise Manager use the names of the servers as registered within Enterprise Manager - not their "real-world" names. Unfortunately, replication does not permit any of the shortcut names to be used.

So, the way to correct this is to delete the registration of the "local" server from within Enterprise manager (right click on the server and select "Delete Server Registration") and then register the server using the actual name of the server.

  • We did that this morning and it worked fine.

    Thanks.
