Hello All,
I'm planning to purchase SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition, however the documentation states that it does not support windows XP, is this correct?

It runs on Windows XP. Quite a few of us have a developer edition version running on Windows XP, even SP2. However, be sure to check the KB articles on making it work.

A colleague has also advised me that I need to install SQL version 7 first, is this correct? and if so why?

Personally I've never had a problem with it on XP. We have a mixture of XP and Win 2K3 and we haven't noticed any differences. Perhaps we don't push it hard enough.
As for installing SQL 7 first - not required. Adsolutely no need what so ever.

If you have to support SQL Server 7, yes. You install it first because SQL Server 7 does not support named instances. Then you can install SQL Server 2000 as a named instance.
