Default task pad view in enterprise manager

  • Can anybody know how to configure enterprise manager to start in task pad view by default?

  • Mine just seems tio remember the view you last used for each database.

  • Thnaks for your reply. I want to have TASKPAD view to every database. Think how useful it is for any new DBA and saves alot of time in clicks

  • This has annoyed me too, on some systems it remembers these settings and on others it seems to lose them. I think it has to do with the MMC (microsoft management console, which EM is a snap in for) settings. The fix I found is a bit obscure but try this:

    1) From the Start menu select Run - type mmc and click OK

     A new MMC console appears

    2) Go to Console-Add/Remove Snap-In (Or type ctrl-M)

    3) Click ADD, select 'Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager', Click Add, close, Click OK

You now have a console basically the same as enterprise manager

    4) navigate to your DBs and change them to taskpad view

    5) close the MMC window

You get prompted to save the console, save it to desktop with your preferred name.

It should now remember your last settings.

If you want to stop it saving further changes you can go to Console-Settings, change to user mode and select 'do not save changes to this console'

  • Another way is to add a /a switch to the EM startup command.  This activates "author" mode.  You will be prompted to save changeswhen you quit.

What I usually do is add the /a, start EM, setup the interface the way I like it, then quit EM. Finally, I remove the /a.

  • Thanks guys for all your usefull suggestions. Now I have few options to configure enterprise manager the way I want.

I thought there might be some parameter/ setting to make the enterprise manager to start in default task pad view. I think it is at code level, which is beyand our reach. May be some microsoft GURU might able to answer this.

I am happy and thankful to all of you. Mail everybody if anybody gets an exact answer.

    Have a nice day!

  • I heard from an instructor that Microsoft had de-emphasized that feature (removed it as a default) because it eventually causes EM to crash and they needed the dev resources for late-shipping Yukon rather than fixing a non-critical piece of the old version.
