SQL and Win XP

  • Just a quick question... is it legal, Microsoftly speaking, to install (and of course use) SQL Server on a PC with Windows XP professional installed as opposed to NT server or 2003 server.  There I've asked it... just hope I get the answer I want to hear!

  • Windows XP only allows the installation of  Evaluation , Developer and Workgroup Edition as well as  Personal Edition and SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE).

Also, be careful - XP sp2 turns on the firewall disallowing SQL Server to listen to the network.

  • The setup program detects what OS you are using and will only allow you to install the proper tools. If you are trying to install SQL 2000 Enterprise or Standard editions on Windows XP Pro, it will notify you that the OS is not a Server OS and only allow you to install the SQL Tools (i.e. profiler, query analyzer...).

There are several versions (Eval, Developer,...) that you can install on a Windows XP Pro machine but you don't get all the functionality and the number of connections allowed to your SQL instance is limited.
