Microsoft Public Beta on AntiSpyware Tools

  • For those who are interested, Microsoft has opened up its AntiSpyware tools to public beta. MS had recently purchased GIANT Company Software to acquire this tool. More here:

  • This site http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm reports GIANT Companies/Microsoft Anti-spyware as respectable and probable capable to do the job.

But why not use the famous two: Ad-aware and Spybot S&D?

  • Someone did a comparison of the GIANT/Microsoft tool versus Spybot and at that point in time, the GIANT/Microsoft tool did detect a few more "hits." However, that's more of a question of signatures and when the last time an update was published. One would expect, at the point in time it was released, for the GIANT/Microsoft tool to have the latest signatures and that certainly explain the difference.

The big delta between the two right now is the GIANT/Microsoft tool has auto update for the signatures and it does have detection capabilities that you normally see with the antivirus programs. However, I don't know if Microsoft's memory resident detection/prevention engine is any better than Spybot's TeaTimer.

My personal experience with the beta doesn't convince me to switch off Spybot at the present time. The MS tool detected only one item on my system when I ran it. That happened to be a false positive. It detected a certain registry key that truth be told, it probably shouldn't have. That registry key is one that determines what zone a given domain is in. When the spyware infects it puts the domain in and I believe drops the zone such that ActiveX and scripting should run. However, some anti-spyware programs also insert the key for the zone to put it in restricted sites. The latter is the case with me. The GIANT/Microsoft application just saw that the key was present. It didn't check the value.
