Remote Backup

  • I am having 10 remote location having dial up connection and running MSDE , any way is there so i can take the all the different database backup in single place.

  • Shouldnt be a problem - the MSDE db is on one machine, correct? If that is the case you can run a backup there by using either TSQL or DMO, just use a job to kick it off at whatever interval is appropriate.

  • i am take the bakcup in local machine ,but i want to take backup in the main office using RAS it is possible.

  • First what speed is the connection and how big is the database?

  • i am using dial up connection 56bps is the speed and databse size may be 200mb

  • First and foremost, my biggest concern is the size of the database going across the link. You may have troubles with that slow of a link with getting a 200 mb db across (about 8+ hour to do). I would suggest if you are going to do this, actually set up a nightly merge replication to your box you will do the backup from but this may take a long time depending on transactions that take place. You are better off making a local backup an then compressing and push to a tape at another location that doing a backup straight across or even possible replication. Most files will compress to 13% the original sze on average thus 200 becomes 26MB and this takes about 1+ hours to move across. Or you could do a full local backup on the remote machine and then restore to the local machine where you will backup to your other media then do a log backup (which are much smaller in most cases) or differential backup and then restore to your local server thus cutting down the amoutn of time to move the data t the backup location. You just need how to quickly and effeciently move you data across that link or get a much faster link.

    Hope this helps.

  • but still it not possible i can do replication of the databse in main server using dial up

  • It is possible (not sure what all to do to setup with MSDE as I don't use). But keep in mind it may not be feasible to accomplish with such a slow connection taking into account the size of the database.

  • You can or you cannot do replication to the main server?

    Per Microsoft:

    quote:

Replication. MSDE 2000 supports merge replication both as a publisher and as a subscriber, allowing you to keep copies of the same data on multiple sites, sometimes covering hundreds of sites.

So as Antares said it's possible, but I am thinking you are having problems getting the merge replication setup and running. Is that correct? If so, what are you running into and we'll try and help.

  • It should be possible technically, but over dialup there may not be enough bandwidth. Also, it the sizes grow there may not be enough time to send this via dialup everyday.
