MSSQL 2000 on Virtual Server ?

  • Hello,

Each time I try to install MSSQL2000/SP3 from cd onto a virtual server (remotely), it hangs during process or at "reboot".

    Any thoughts or experiences?

    Many thanks. Jeff

  • With MS Virtual Server and VMware I was always able to install, however at least SP4. Before you install mssql is the server working fine ? Did you install the tools (driver package) for the virtual server ?

  • don't know if this will help, but this thread talks about differences in file/folder permissions screwing up an install on a normal machine:

  • I too have had no difficulties installing anything really on a MS VM provided you install the tools etc... However, I typically install from ISO's not CD's because it's just plain faster.

when you say you are installing it remotely, what do you mean? you have the VM up and running and you are connecting with Terminal services to do the install or something? (never done it this way) Or are you connecting via the Virtual server Admin page to do the install? (I've always done it this way)

I do know of apps that have issues when you install them from a TS session, but most of the time it just works...

  • More than likely, there is an error that is popping up on the console that you cannot see.  You should be able to see the "application popup" error in the event viewer.  You can use Remote Desktop to log into the console with the /console switch.... %SystemRoot%\System32\mstsc.exe /console

However, if you have the means to install it from a real remote control application such as through a network switch, I would do it that way.

  • "Or are you connecting via the Virtual server Admin page to do the install"

This is a good point. As far as I know the connection over the admin page provides a console connection. If the server is not restarting, I suppose that the problem is more related to a driver or a OS error . Check the virtual server log.
