Issue with sql 2

  • I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition on Windows Server 2012 standard. Running the setup.exe as administrator, the very first prompt tells me the program has compatibility issues with Microsoft SQL Server (2008 and 2008 R2). I select the option to run the program without online help. Next prompt indicates the following feature couldn't be installed: ".Net Framework 3.5(includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)".

Reviewing the event viewer did not help all that much, found the following:

"The application (Microsoft SQL Server (2008 and 2008 R2), from vendor Microsoft) has the following problem: After SQL Server setup completes you will need to install service packs before running SQL Server on this version of Windows. For SQL Server 2008, you will need to install Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later. For SQL Server 2008 R2, you will need to install Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later."

So there's a requirement to install at least SQL Server SP1. That's after the install, which we're not up to doing yet.

Prompts and event viewer are not giving me much guidance. Googling this a bit but hoping there's some one who has run into this. I did find "https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2681562" though this not appear to help all that much. It indicates the RTM install is supported, which we're not experiencing.

Are there any specific posts to this issue? Comments / URLs are appreciated.

  • It's resolved. The issue was getting .NET Framework 3.5 on the server. We had issues doing that, finally got it done. Problem was 3.5 had to be on the server to load, otherwise it would not work.

Once that was done I was able to run the SQL installation software. I'm still getting the "program has compatibility issues" but we're moving forward by selecting "Run the program without the getting help".

Not to fond of this operating system right now.
