does anyone have experience with netbackup 6.5 and mirrored databases

  • i try to made backups with veritas netbackup 6.5 and the mssql addin on mirrored databases.

but it doesnt work for me. i don't know if i make some mistakes or it doesn't work contrary the documentation.

i know that i can not backup databases which are in restore mode but NB6.5 should handle this.

Also in the backup history both serveres, principal and mirror, should list the backups made, independently where the backups made.

so if anyone have experience with this constellation and can provide a working *.bch skript and have suggestions what to be done on masterserver or anything else.

    you would be very appreciated.

    kind regards

    Michael

  • i run 6 MP4 and going to 6.5 soon but haven't backed up mirrored db's

did you read the SQL agent manual that came with it? it's over 100 pages long and goes into a lot of detail.

  • yes, it has many lines to read but only a view lines about mirroring.

so i can tell you that it doesnt help to have this guide.

  • does MS even support backing up mirrored databases? the netbackup agents just use the MS API's when backing up the data

  • no sqlserver can not backup databases which are in recoverymode (the mirror role).

but my idea behind the question is, the possibility to backup all databases on both servers (principal and mirror role) except the databases which are in recover mode.

these are the system db's and every database which is standalone.

the Backup is only the on side, but the restore is the problem on the other hand.

    i try to explain.

hostA is the principal and hostB is the mirror. we made a full backup every evening and transactionlog backups every hour between 8am and 8pm

one day at 11:30am the hostA goes down, no chance to repair. we must switch to hostB.

the next backup should be the tlog @ 12am but if you then must restore anything, you must have the fullbackup and some tlog backups which are from the hostA to restore to hostB

this is only possible with an move template also if you need a tlog from hostB you have after that to restore the tlog from hostB.

You see, it's a lot work waiting for you if you have to do that.

The idea in NB6.5 Admin Guide is, to make backups which are restoreable from both sides.

in the guide it announce like 'if you open the backup history on the server which is in principle role you can see the backups from both hosts'

and so you can restore directly without the difficult way over move template.

i hope i could establish a little bit more understanding to my problem. (with my little english language skills)

    bye
