Hi All
I have been trying for four days now to install sql 2016 on Windows 10. I previous had a perfectly good working version of 2012 (Developer) working in desparation I uninstalled 2012 thinking this was part of the problems.
Now each time I try to install (2016)/2014/2012) I get the same error message:
Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
Error code 0x84BB0001.
I have tried the download version of Express from Microsoft, mounting/extracting ISO's changing all the permissions on the drives to be installed on and from.
Set the agent and Database Engine service to be SYSTEM to be anyone who is an administrator.
Tried hacking the registry as instructed by many sites
I have spent days trawling every single forum and internet search, seems many people have the same issue but no-one seems to have a fix.
My only next step is to completely rebuild my PC.
Please help me guys I just cannot get this to work and it's been days now.

If you are that desperate try:
1. Make sure you have a backup of everything you need
2. Uninstall anything to do with SQL Server
3. Delete the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
4. Use Regedit to get rid of HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
5. Restart the machine
6. Try installing the version of SQL Server you want.
Guarantees neither given nor implied!!!!!!!
You might be better waiting to see of someone can sort out your command line argument.

Thank you fellahs I will try both suggestions. However I have been down most of those routes before.
I simply can't believe it can be this difficult and such a 'phaff' to get it working. I have, until recently had many instances of SQL running on one server and never had this much problem, I am certain it is down to Windows 10 rather than SQL itself.
I will let you know how I get on.

have a similar problem issue on Windows Server 2012 while upgrading from 2012.

I never got to the bottom of it. I had to format my server, install Windows 10 Pro and then install SQL Server 2016
Frustrated there was never a real answer out there
