Automating SQL Server Patching for 10000+ Instances.

  • Team,

Is there any Best Practice, 3rd Party Tool for Automating SQL Server Patching for around 10000+ SQL instances.

It is very difficult to do the same manually because each server will consume atleast 1-2 hours and if this is completely done manually then n number of people might be required for accomplishing this task which doesn't looks feasible at all.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    With Thanks,

  • Ok.... you've got my curiosity up. 10,000+ instances? Why so many?

And considering that the max number of instances you can have per machine is 50, that would mean a minimum of 200 machines and the Windows and SQL Server licensing that goes with all that. How much are you paying for licensing? I could be wrong but it sounds like at least 4 Million in USD.

Or was this just an interview question?

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.

Maybe a volume licence deal of somekind, either way, it sounds like there would benefits to be gained from a consolidation exercise

  • The customer is a fortune 5 company in the US, IT budget itself is a 100 million + USD per year and therefore the number of instances is pretty high.
