Enterprise Edition Licensing for SQL Server in a clustered environment

  • I am trying to convince management to implement clustering for HA purposes as we only have a DR setup . They want a solution to the HA problem but it has to be cheap.

I currently have a Windows machine that host two instances of SQL Server using 16 CPU cores in total. If I create another machine with the same specs, and setup clustering for both the instances, how many cores do we have to get licenses for? Can someone tell me?

    Thanks,

    Sanjay

  • It depends if the second node will be passive or not. Check the licensing guide from Microsoft.

you cannot convert standalone instances to clustered.

This will involve forming a windows server failover cluster, deploying new clustered instances and migrating objects (databases, jobs, users, etc) from the standalone instance to the clustered instance

  • I am fully aware of that Perry. However, we have limited number of Entperprise licenses and I want to know how many licenses we need for the cluster before I go to the management with the plan.

That's not the way it appeared from your OP, however, the user above posted the licensing guide, this details how the licensing works and will be based on the licence model you have purchased.

HA and DR are anything but cheap, they require levels of software and hardware that are expensive, you either invest the funds or you don't.
