Monitoring Sql Server 2012 or 2014

  • Hello,

I created a tool to monitor Sql Server because I felt that this is a area where Sql Server is seriously lacking when compared with Oracle.

Since I started my carer as DBA with Oracle I got used to have a large set of tools to monitor the DB. When I then started working with Sql Server I felt that much more could be done on top of what Activity Monitor already provides.

With that in mind I decided to create a tool (Add-In) to add some of those functionalities to Sql Server. The Beta version is finish, and I would love if you could try it and give me your thoughts on it, even if just to say it wasn't necessary.

The tool can be downloaded at http://instancemonitor.riddle.pt. All the instructions about how it should be used are in the website and inside the zip files (download files).

I would really love to hear the thoughts of the community about this project.

    Thank you very much,

Looking forward to hear from you,

    hugo alves

  • Best of luck on the project. There are a lot of third party tools already filling this niche in various ways, just so you know.

  • Thank you very much Grant.

The necessity for this tool came from a search that I had to do, while at work, in the market for such a tool.

What I got were one of two situations: either the tools could do what I wanted but they were just too expensive or they were "cheap" but were lacking in features.

My aim here, with the freeware version, is to create a tool that can give the DBA almost everything he might need for a first step and a second step in the resolution of problems that might arise with the instance.

Then, in the Standard version, my aim is to add some extra features that will give real detail about Sql Server structures (cpu, memory, disk) and that you wont see that frequently in other tools (especially, tools in the same price range as this one). Also, some very unique features will be present in the Standard version.

The Enterprise version is a truly different beast 😉 . It's a monitoring tool for the entire company (at almost all levels - network, OS, Application, DB) disguised as a Sql Server monitoring tool. Some already exist in the market (probably not with the same reach that this one can/will have) but, in my opinion, for prohibited prices.

At the end of the day, I'm a DBA. What I would like to do (especially for the freeware version) is to create a tool that fits what DBAs are looking for. That's why I would love to have other DBAs point of view about what they would want to have and what is wrong about the currrent version.

Again, thank you very much for your comment.
