Hi,
We are looking to upgrade SQL Server from 2005 Enterprise Ed to 2008 R2 Standard Ed.
Assuming there are no enterprise features in place, can a straightforward in-place upgrade be performed? I've seen in other sites that the procedure for downgrading editions requires uninstalling/installing SQL Server, but there were no version changes involved there.

Going from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition will require an uninstall of SQL Server 2005 EE and then an install of SQL Server 2008 R2 SE if you want it to retain the default instance (if it currently is). Your other option is a side by side install installing SQL Server 2008 R2 SE as a named instance.

I'd also recommend upgrading to 2012 if possible. Mainstream support for R2 ends next year (7/8/2014)
