SQL Monitoring Software

  • Hi,

I'm preparing to investigate several monitoring software products. Some of the key features I'm looking for are:

    1. Ability to scrape Windows Application log for MSSQL Errors and alert

    2. Ability to run and trend SQL Queries.

    3. Ability to run and trend WMI objects.

Here's the list of software products I'm planning on looking at:

    1. Idera

    2. SQLSentry

    3. Quest

    4. RedGate

Has anyone done this sort of evaluation before? Know if any of them will do what I'm looking for? Have strong feelings for or against any of these products?

While I'm sure all four are great products, we've gone with both Idera Diagnostic Manager and SQL Sentry (event manager and performance advisor). Of the two, SQL Sentry is my personal favorite and I use it regularly. I seem to have better luck finding what I am looking for in SQL Sentry than I do in Diagnostic Manager. The blocking sql tab in SQL Sentry has been worth its wait in gold on numerous occasions.

I also like the event manager calendar feature that allows you to create a single view of scheduled jobs across multiple servers and even include windows scheduled jobs. If you need a maintenance window, this makes it easy to find an open one.

  • I suppose I should add System Center Operations Manager with System Center Monitoring pack for SQL Server to the list.

  • I evaluated most of them before I went for Idera's DM and it's been great in terms of helping me easily spot issues.
