SQL Server 2008 R2 Srvice Pack installation

  • Hi,

I have a very basic question. Can we install the service pack for only 1 instance on a server if I have many instances on it ? I think we can do that, but I want to be sure.

    * I will test that myself, but runing out of time right now.

    Any help is appreciated 🙂

  • Yes, you can insall service pack each of the Instances or if you wish to Install for all Instances.

  • Just make that the instance your are applying the service pack to stopped else you may run into an issue where files are locked and the service pack will only be effective after a reboot (which will affect the other instances!).

  • Thanks for the replies folks! One more question is, what about the shared components ? Should I update them too if I am installing the Service Pack for just one instance ?

  • I have done this twice, the last time was applying SP3 this past Sunday to sql2008 active/active cluster.

My situation, WIn2008/SQL2008 Cluster default instance and INST2 instance.

WHen you go to apply the service pack it will sense how many instances you have. If you have two it will show default and the other instances and checks will be in checkboxes next to them on one of the screens. Simply remove the checks from the ones you don't want the service pack applied to.

Your question about the Mgt tools... when you apply the service pack the first time it will force an apply of it to the toolset, you don't get the option of not.
