netbackup tool permissions to connect to sql server

  • Hello All,

We are planning to implement backup's using veritas netbackup tool and for this I have created a sql account with basic dbreader and backup operator roles onto the required databases. I am assuming this should be good enough for the tool to connect and do the backup and restores.

But I am not able to connect to the sql when I try from the netbackup tool. But when I update the permission to sys admin, I am able to connect.

When I remove sysadmin and update with dbowner, I am not able to connect again.

so am I missing any server level permissions for the sql account?

Please help me on this to get this resolved asap.

  • Does the account have access to it's default database?

  • Yes the acccount has access to the all the databases with datareader and backupoperator roles.

  • Does the error message on login (or logged to the error log) hold any clues as to what may be going on?

  • Nope, Its a generic error message saying connection could not be established. But when I give sysadmin access, it works like charm.

I am thinking, it might be something with the access. I even tried updating the account with dbowner level access and its still the same. I think there must be something at the server level access issues.

  • Please check if Login has explicit Connect permissions on server. A user can connect to server even without explicit connect permission if sysadmin permissions are given.

  • How to provide Explicit permissions? I never did this. Can explain me in detail..
