Server Restart?

  • Easiest question of the day...

After installing a service pack updates I am told that a restart of the server is required to complete the installation.

At this point can I Restart the MSSQLSERVER in configuration manager or do I actually need to perform a START > Shutdown > Restart of the physical box?

  • A restart of services are required after installing a Service Pack or a Cumulative Update and it is a good practice to reboot the server after installing a Service Pack or a Cumulative Update.

First thing first, when you are asked by the installation to restart the server , it is actually talking about your physical Server not just your sql server service or else.

Sql server services are automatically restarted a few times during the installation itself. So, you don't need to restart your sql server services after the installation. But what you actually require is to restart your physical server to take the installation into Affect.

  • SP4 doesn't seem to require a reboot or manual restart of services. (Recently installed on test server). However, I'll probably be doing reboots on the production boxes - just in case.

  • A reboot will not be required if you don't have any of the affected SQL Services running - a list will be provided during the Service Pack installation process. However, it is always good practice to reboot after the application of any Service Pack.
