fdhost.exe and SP2 for MSSQL 2008

  • When I try to install SP2 for SQL Server 2008 the wizard runs a check to verify files in use. It comes up with a file called fdhost.exe. In task manager this is SQL Full text host. But I can't find any way of disabling this. I've also found some post on the web regarding issues with the master database after they manually kill this process and apply SP2.

    Any input?

  • The fdhost.exe deals with the Full Text search capability that was added in SQL Server 2008. To stop the fdhost.exe use SQL Server Configuration Manager and stop the Full Text Service. I also stopped SQL Server and Integration Services too. Then close the Configuration Manager. Depending on how quickly your server refreshes when you run the check it should now be ready to complete the installation properly.

  • If you simply continue on with the install all that it will cause is it will force you to do a server reboot to load the new .dlls. It won't cause any harm.
