We installed SQL 2008 on one of our first VM installs and have been happy with it. But over the past year or so, the demands on the SQL instance have grown to the point where more CPU and memory would be helpful.
We have been able to VMotion the VM between machines without problems and that works well. But is it possible to VMotion to another machine that has more CPU and memory associated to it? (Sorry, I don't really understand all the VMware terms used)
Basically there is a new box that we can either move to as a new VM box or do a virtual to physical move. I'd like to keep the VM if possible, but not sure how to add memory and CPU to the VM. Our VM administrator doesn't know if it is possible and it isn't a high priority on his list. So hopefully it can be done and someone here can point us in the right direction.

To add more CPU and RAM shutdown the virtual machine and then from the VMWare virtual infrastructure client edit the VM settings. Increase the CPU and RAM and then restart the VM.
How many CPUs are currently assigned?

Great to hear it is a simple as that. We are a pretty small operation and learning what to do (and unfortunately what not to do) as we go. I'll talk to the VM admin and see if we can get that scheduled.
Currently only 12GB of RAM and only 2GHz on 1CPU allocated for SQL, just not enough.
Are you the same Perry Whittle that wrote the VM Clustering article recently?

I would of thought the RAM is ok, definitely ramp up the CPU to 2. Check the server in device manager once it boots that the multi processor HAL has been loaded.

I thought it was a good article but haven't had a chance to set up an environment to work with yet. One more thing on my to do list...
Our VM admin says adding the memory isn't a problem but is worried about adding the CPU, says
"Adding a CPU can cause a problem, because of the way the OS handles updating hardware. I've always been told if you need more CPU, a rebuild is usually required."
I forwarded you comment about the multi processor HAL being loaded and have to see what he finds.

The OS rebuild when adding a new CPU only affected Windows 2000.
2003 and 2008 should be fine just ensure the multi processor HAL is loaded 😉
