SQl Service licensing question

  • Hi,

I need to buy a Sql Server license to a client.

The application that uses the sql server runs with a web service, so it is just used one user in the connection string to connect to the database.

My question is about the CALs required..

Since it is only used one user in several computers to access the DB, can just we buy 1

SQL SERVER 2008 server plus one CAL licensing?

If anyone could help me with this question, i appreciate.

    Thanks

No. The end consumers of the web service are considered users for the purposes of CALs

Sounds like what you need is SQL Server Web edition. It's licensed for web sites, web services, etc.

  • GilaMonster,

    Thanks for your quickly reply.

In this case, the application uses a web service, but it is a windows application, installed and used just inside an intranet. I think i do not need sql web edition. Let me know if i am wrong.

So, like you said i need a CAL by user/computer. How do i get the users?

Do i need a CAL by each windows computer user in all computers where my application is installed?

Or.. Do i need a CAL by each user logged in my application, regardless the the windows users?

    Thanks again.

  • I suggest that you have a chat with someone at Microsoft licensing on this.

  • Ok, thanks.

  • If this is Intranet facing then you will be able to use a CAL

If this is public Internet facing then web licence is required.

How ever many different users there are that will use the system = the amount of cals you will require.

depending on the amount of users you may prefer a processor licence
