SQL 2008 R2 in VM and backups

  • The question: How can I stop vmware tools / snap manager stop automatically making a database backup and only use CommVault?

    What is happening:

We have been using CommVault Galaxy to do all our SQL backups & differentials.

We have been upgrading our 2005 & 2008 servers to 2008 R2 in a virtual environment.

CommVault is still being used for all SQL backups, but ever since they went virtual we now have backups through some kind of vss snapshot that vmware tools / snap manager for VMware will call for, and on SQL 2008 / Server 2008, it will perform the backup as part of the vmware snapshot.

The backup that vmware does is a full and then the CommVault backup starts 4 hours later with a full plus differentials throughout the day.

I just want to be able to shut off the vmware tools / snap manager for VMware.

    Thanks much.

  • I would check VMware or whatever SAN you are using website for thelp on this.

  • Just to be clear, you are seeing a SQL backup in msdb..backuphistory from VMWare and there aren't any jobs setup?

It's certainly possible, and I would agree with CarpenterBob that you ought to check with the VMWare people as this can impact your recoverability and the base backup you need for restores.

  • Yes. It actually looks like it is coming from NetApp. I guess tha if you have a virtual SQL server and running ComVault for backups (netApp in the background) this is a common occurrence.

Our server ops guys are looking into a fix for this. If\when they figure it out I'll post what it is.
